I still remember the time when I was standing on the stage to introduce our start-up project to the investors. It was our last straw to attract investors because our website funds were almost exhausted. Even with recognition from the Ex-CEO of TUDOU, Chinese version of YouTube that went public on NASDAQ in 2011, I could tell what I presented didn’t attract them. At that moment one of the investors patted my shoulder and said, “Young man, there’s no doubt that you have the gift of doing business, but successful entrepreneurs need to combine business with technology”. What he said triggered me to rethink the weaknesses of our project, which was lacking advanced technology and business knowledge. I was inspired by his word and decided to pursue further education.
Since junior high school, I consistently browsed websites such as theVerge.com, Engadget.com to absorb fresh insights from IT industry, and I was nicknamed by my classmates as ‘Fan of Internet’. Thereupon, in my sophomore year in college, I initiated an entrepreneurial program named Babyshuo, a social media website for young mothers to share young children’s products. Our website attracted over 50,000 registered users and the returning rate reached 45% at the highest point in less than eight months. These active users conducted large scale of data, which provided potential value on commerce and user experience enhancement. However, I found myself unable to utilize these data since my undergraduate major in Traffic Engineering is not closely related to this field. This deficiency ignited my interest in data management and application. Thus, I made my mind to pursue IS&T (Information Science & Technology) as my major in graduate study.
During my graduate study, I would like to focus on enterprise system development and resource management, a field that is filled with potentials of revolution. My short-term career goal is to pursue an IT consultant role, in which I aim to devote what I learn into real world situations, and accumulate valuable experience of technology and management. For a long-term goal, I would prefer to establish my own business. I believe this program at Temple University can help me reach my goals. What attract me most about this program is that, first of all, the faculty members have solid connections with industry professionals. Besides, compared to other IS programs, this small program can help me build strong professional relationships with professors.
In my undergraduate study, I prepared myself to get into the field of information science by taking major courses such as Management Science, Traffic Information System, Database Principle & Application, etc. Also, my coursework in Database Principle and Application enriched my understanding in programming. In the process of completing this project, I utilized Visual Basic language for the front-end application programming, and SQL database language to set up the back-end database system. In the end, I integrated two parts to form a complete set of library information management system. This system has the functions of browsing, modifying the library records, and presenting teachers and students’ user interfaces. I realized the purpose of the project was not only about writing codes, but the user experience is also crucial to be considered. Thus, I added some small functions that are convenient to users, such as book returning reminder, book recommendation lists based on students’ majors and study rooms reservation reminder. Eventually, I received the top grade among all other students in the class.
Besides programming, in the domain of data analysis, I gained practical internship experience at Eachcloud Inc. This leading start-up company was selected by Microsoft Incubator. I led a team of six members and took responsibility for website operation, promotion strategy and website management. In this role, my critical thinking, user-oriented mindset and business leadership was greatly improved, and I received positive feedback from my colleagues. Also, I taught myself the methodologies of using BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) like Google Analysis, analyzing and calculating Conversions Rate, Repeat Visitor Share, Committed Visitor Index and other website key variables. Having inspired by the concept of data-driven website operation, I then converted the data into website optimization plans. This internship experience leads me to later discover more insights in data analysis from a research perspective.
For my research achievement, I accomplished my senior design named Data Mining on Data Collection of Intelligent Transportation Detectors. Although in my major courses, I learned that the current data mining of road detectors’ data was concentrated on a single detector, but none of them can measure each main variable, including traffic speed, traffic flow and road occupation rate precisely. For example, loop vehicle detector is better than RTMS (Remote Traffic Microwave Sensor) in measuring traffic speed, but not traffic flow. On the contrary, the effect of calculating traffic flow for RTMS outweighs what loop vehicle detector does. Therefore, with the project objective of obtaining more accurate data mining result, I came up with an idea that integrates two complementary detector’s data. First of all, I utilized data mining approach to form two formulas that can calculate traffic flow as well as road occupation rate from the data of RTMS detector. Second, I substituted loop vehicle detector’s traffic flow and occupation rate for new results occurred from these formulas. Lastly, I mined the final collected data from the previous step and yielded the prediction for the road traffic variables. In order to verify the accuracy of the outcome, I simulated the given road traffic using Vissim. In the end, it turned out that my project was successful because my prediction matched the simulation. I am proud to say that I am one of the top three students receiving the highest grades from the research committee.
When it comes to adequate programming experience that this program prefers, I am currently learning Java on online learning websites like Coursera to enhance a variety of programming languages skills. However, I am certain that my potential in technology and previous experience in business would assist me in mastering graduate coursework at Information Science and Technology program of Temple University. Moreover, as a young Chinese entrepreneur, I firmly believe that I could bring unique thoughts into various class discussions, campus activities as well as student diversity and engagement.
短版: As my understanding and interest in information system grows, I am eager to explore further studies in this field. Through my academic achievements, internship experiences and research opportunities, I prepared myself to pursue the master degree in Information System.

What attracts me most about this program at Northeastern University is that, first of all, I appreciate the co-up experience that this program required, by doing so, I can acquire and integrate both hand-on experience and theatrical knowledge, therefore offering me a better chance to successfully jump-start my career. Moreover, the diverse background of students who attend this program will cast light on the application of information system and big data in different industries. Thus I can expect for more profound insights from my classmates. Also, I can benefit from the pathway education since I only had the chance to take a few information technology related courses during my undergrad study. Finally, the outstanding location and strong alumni network of Northeastern University also inspires me to apply. After graduating from this program, I aim to pursue an IT consultant role, in which I could apply what I learn into real world situations and accumulate valuable experience in technology and management. For a long-term goal, I would prefer to establish my own business.
Since my junior year in Nanjing University of Science and Technology, I devoted myself more to academics from extra-curricular activities so that I could get prepared to enter the field of information system. Other than boosting my grades, I also strived to improve my programing skills. In my coursework in Database Principle and Application, I built a complete set of library information management system, utilizing Visual Basic language for the front-end application programming, and SQL database language to set up the back-end database system. As a result, I received the top grade in my class. Also, in order to obtain deeper understanding in technology and varied programing skills, I am currently learning Python and CS101 through online resources like Coursera.com.

For my research achievement, I accomplished my senior design named Data Mining on Data Collection of Intelligent Transportation Detectors. In order to overcome the barrier of the imprecision of a single traffic detector, I came up with an idea to integrate two complementary detector’s data. However, this notion was barely carried out by previous researchers. For that reason, I had to go through tons of background knowledge and tried different ways to come up with a valid method. Eventually, the effort paid off because my final data mining result matched the verified simulation perfectly. In the end, I am proud to say that I am one of the top three students receiving the highest grades from the research committee.
Although I was neither major in Business nor Computer Technology in my previous study, I still developed strong passion in these fields through continuous real world practices and related research experiences. I am certain that my potential in technology and previous experience in business would assist me in mastering graduate coursework in the Information System program at Northeaster University. Moreover, as a young Chinese entrepreneur, I firmly believe that I could bring unique thoughts into various class discussions, project development, as well as student diversity and engagement.
