group") please note that we do not admit students to specific research
groups or
projects. That is, we do not generally associate new students with a
specific RA in
advance (except in some rare cases when a student is already engaged in
research
with the relevant faculty researchers here, or their collaborators
elsewhere). Once
students are involved in the program here, they interact over the first
year or two
with multiple professors and research groups, and settle on advisor(s)
typically during
that period.

On your other specific question ("target candidates"), the basic advice
is to be clear and
forthright in your personal statement-- both about your interests in
statistics and why
you are applying for PhD at all, and then about why you are applying to
our program
We review many applications each year, and many of those are very
high-achievers in
core scholarship. What stands out in competitive applications is serious
past exposure
to a research of any kind, clear messages about motivation, and why the
applicant
has chosen to apply to Duke, in particular.
