Multiple Research Assistantships (RA) are available for 2015 Fall in Prof. Guoliang Xing's group, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Michigan State University. Successful applicants will be working on one of the following research projects.
Smartphone and Ubiquitous Computing Systems
- Mobile health systems using smartphones and wearable devices
- Smartphone-based sleep quality and exercise monitoring
- Body sensor networks for personalized health assessment
- Near Field Communication (NFC) security
- Visible light-based near field communication
Wireless and Vehicular Networks
- Vehicular sensing systems
- Vehicular wireless networks
Cyber-Physical Systems for Sustainability
- Aquatic ecosystem monitoring using robotic sensor networks
- Real-time volcano/earthquake monitoring and tomography
- Smart home and residential power usage monitoring
Our research results are published regularly in top conferences (e.g., MobiSys, SenSys, MobiCom, RTSS) and premier journals (i.e., various IEEE/ACM Transactions). We have received multiple Best Paper Awards and Best Mobile App awards from premier conferences. Preference will be given to candidates who major in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and have strong hands-on experiences in computer systems, smartphones, embedded systems, signal processing, and circuit design. Exceptional undergraduate students with strong research experience are especially welcome to apply. Prospective Ph.D. students are strongly advised to read our papers listed at cse.msu.edu before submitting an application.

Why CSE@MSU? The Computer Science Doctoral Program at Michigan State University placed in the top 17% of the United States according to the recently released National Research Council's (NRC) ranking. The NRC's "Data-Based Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs" provides two ranking metrics, which are ranges for which the ranking is 90% confident. Of the 126 programs assessed, one ranking (R-ranking) places the MSU's Computer Science Doctoral Program within the top 10%-25% in the U.S., and the other ranking (S-ranking) places MSU in the top 8%-35% in the U.S. When program scores are sorted according to the rankings, MSU's computer science doctoral program falls within the top 17% of all the programs in the U.S. Further information about the NRC rankings may be found at sites.nationalacademies.org
