After some digging, here's what I've found out, paraphrased from a friend of mine who's starting Google's CS Academy.

CS Academy is a 1-year program that trains you to be awesome in the industry.

For the first 3 months, there are classes taught by senior engineers on topics that bridge academia and industry, e.g. automated unit-testing systems, and "Advanced Python". The classes are optional (no exams or anything), and are just there are a resource. I believe you also work on a project that's just yours for those 3 months.

During the year, you do rotations between 2 Google teams in different positions (software engineer, test engineer, or reliability engineer) to explore options and see different parts of Google.

Finally, you go through a conversion process where they decide whether or not to move to you to full-time. I'm not sure how many interviews are done during this conversion.

I was initially put off by the name because it sounded remedial. However, Google has no reason to have a remedial program -- they have too many qualified applicants. Really, the reason that Google has the program is that they get a lot of smart college students who are awesome at academic CS but not great at industry CS, which makes sense because they're totally different. So, they want to train people to be great in industry before giving them offers. It's basically an extended interview period where, at the end of the year, if you don't measure up, Google can get rid of you. That eliminates a lot of risk on their part, but it also means that if you're any good, you will probably get an offer afterwards.

Hope that helps!
