其实我有点海套的意思,还没看清楚老师的研究方向就发了一封Email,结果老师的回复也是满满的诚意,如下:
Dear Li Jiangyu,
thanks much for your message and interest in our program. I will be quite eager to find a student to join my active tectonics research group this coming year. Of course, graduate school admissions are a competitive/difficult process, and most years more than 20 applicants are interested in my group, from which we have to select one or two to recommend for admission. However, I am not quite sure if your background and interests are the best match for what we do in my group.

Our research is quite interdisciplinary focusing on the recent, neotectonic aspects of deformation, rather than tectonics/structural geology in a classic sense. That is, we rely on a mix of geodesy using GPS and InSAR, investigations of (micro)seismicity, tectonic geomorphology, and field mapping. Such observations can then be used to constrain models (usually mathematical constructs) of the first-order mechanics of an actively deforming region, such as the San Andreas fault system, Alaska, Japan, the Sumatra-Andaman subduction zone, or the India-Eurasia collision zone. Many of our efforts are focused on elucidating the various components of the earthquake cycle and related rheological properties of lithospheric materials. We also consider repeating micro-earthquakes and deeply seated non-volcanic tremors to improve our understanding of the behavior of shallow and deep fault zones, respectively. A related topic of interest is related to earthquake triggering and fault interaction via static and dynamic processes. Finally, we have interests in deformation related to non-tectonic surface loads, subsurface fluid flow and landsliding. Our group web pages with references and some research summaries are at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX These should give you an overview of some of the things we've been working on and the approaches we've taken.

I do appreciate, and encourage students who have their own ideas for possible research projects. It would be good to discuss possible projects and ideas during and even prior to the application process, depending on your interests.

The department web pages atxxxxxxxx provide information about other faculty and programs, and applicant information. You may want to contact some of the other faculty members whose program would also be of interest to you. We fully support all of our students (that is, we pay for tuition, fees, and salary).

Please don't hesitate to get back to me with any additional questions you may have.

Cheers,
Roland
