Applicants for 2 postdocs and 3 full-time graduate student positions in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology and Precision Medicine are invited to join Wang Lab (http://www.cancer-systemsbiology.org) and Long Lab (http://www.ucalgary.ca/bmb/profiles/dr-quan-long) at University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine, Calgary, Canada.

These two Labs work on both computational and experimental work. The candidates are expected to involve in big data analysis, machine learning and deep learning, algorithm development in next-gen sequencing, genomic analysis and evolutionary studies. The candidates are expected to interact with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists with background ranging from omics, drug design, imaging engineering, statistics, computer science, clinics to bioinformatics.

The objectives of the studies are to understand biological systems (such as signaling, gene regulation, protein interaction networks, metabolic networks and their dynamics in cancer progression) and develop practical applications through mathematical and statistical analysis, machine learning and deep learning, numerical simulation and integrating large amount of internally and externally experimental datasets including genomic, functional genomic, next-generation sequencing, microarray, and proteomic data. The candidate is expected to be able to develop new algorithms to make sense of these data and construct predictive models for precision medicine applications, and predicting phenotype based on genomics.

Qualifications for postdoctoral candidates:

A PhD in bioinformatics, systems biology, computer science, statistics/math, or theoretical physics. Required skills: (1) Strong programming skills in one or more of the following programming languages: Perl, Python, Java, C/C++; (2) Knowledge in probability theory, statistics or pattern recognition. It would be an asset if the candidate has knowledge of and experience with: graph and network theory, microarray and proteomics data analysis, next-generation sequencing data analysis, biological networks, numerical analysis, simulation, control, and information theory, and R programming.

Qualifications for candidates of MSc and PhD students:

A BSc/MSc in bioinformatics, systems biology, computer science, statistics, math, or theoretical physics. Required skills: (1) Strong programming skills in one or more of the following programming languages: Perl, Python, Java, C/C++; (2) Knowledge in probability theory, statistics or pattern recognition; (3) The applicants’ GPA and English proficiency (if non-native speaker) must meet the requirement of the university (http://www.grad.ucalgary.ca/future/admissions/admission-requirements) and the department (http://www.ucalgary.ca/bmb/GPA, http://www.ucalgary.ca/bmb/English_Language_Requirement).

The University of Calgary is a leading Canadian university located in the nation’s most enterprising city. The university has a clear strategic direction to become one of Canada’s top five research universities, where innovative teaching and ground-breaking research go hand in hand, and where we fully engage the communities we both serve and lead.

To succeed as one of Canada's top universities, where new ideas are created, tested and applied through first class teaching and research, the University of Calgary needs more of the best minds in our classrooms and labs. We're increasing our scholarly capacity by investing in people who want to change the world, bringing the best and brightest to Calgary to form a global intellectual hub and achieve advances that matter to everyone. Named a cultural capital of Canada and one of the best places to live in the world, Calgary, Canada’s fastest growing major city, offers a vibrant, multicultural and family-oriented environment with a population of more than one million. Situated near the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park and Lake Louise, Calgary has great quality of life and outstanding recreational activities.
