想申请KCL的phd，给教授发邮件收到这个回复是不是没戏了？

国内211本科，GPA 88，一篇一作（非核心），想申请KCL的phd，给教授发邮件以后收到回复是

phd的话不是应该要套磁了有supervisor才可以申请么？直接申请应该成功概率很小吧...？请问收到这个回复是不是就没戏了？
