Personal Statement
For the purpose of exploring more in physics, I chose applied physics as my major, and applied mathematics my second major. During my undergraduate studies, I strived to make progress in experiments and achieved improvement by my practice in and out of the lab, I regularly reported and discussed my work with my advisor and understood the importance of communications, and most significantly I found it most enjoyable to achieve the truth and better solutions with my consistent effort. In order for further knowledge and advanced experience in this field, I am determined to pursue a PH.D degree in your graduate school.

Through some relatively challenging experiments at first, I realized “practice makes perfect” actually made sense. In the lab, the first part of experiments was the fabrication of grating structures using laser interference lithography. The fabrication process was not automate and therefore the time for exposure and etching should be manipulated with great accuracy. Faced up with my unstable products, I repeated the process in the lab with much enthusiasm and concentrations. Even in the dorm I tried to use my toothbrush and cup to imitate the beaker and a clamp used for etching. Finally I stabilized the speed of my action and grasped the skills. Moreover, in the following works of two-dimensional arrays, the accumulated experience from prior fabrications was of great assistance. I could quickly judge whether the exposure time was excessive or deficient and therefore the adjustment was made in a short time. The successful fabrication of two-dimensional structure was a great start, and it brought with me sufficient confidence to continue with my research.

As I continued in this project, my aspiration for better solutions was increasingly intense. The adjacent research was focused on one sample of a two-dimensional structure, with both 300 nm and 1000 nm pitches. After spectra measurements and simulations of a traditional two-dimensional grating, the discrepancy between the two confused me but my aspiration to see the truth motivated me to check relevant papers and to restart the measurements. I ruled out the possibilities of correlative theories individually in succession according to corresponding papers and my own calculations, and the repeated experiments ensured the accuracy of collected data. Therefore the problem should probably be ascribed to the structure of the sample. I discussed the consequence with my advisor, and he suggested me on characterizing the sample carefully and sent me another paper about the effect of distortion on the grating surface. Following the advice I checked the scanning electronic microscopy image and discovered that the slit of 1000 nm pitch grating was deeper than that of 300 nm. In another word, the 300 nm gratings was only overlapping the other one. Though excited by this new discovery, I decided to revise my model first and made anther simulation. As expected, the simulations were in well agreement with the experimental results. Theoretically, since the construction was stratified, I made an analogy with the transmission of bilayer structure, and this explanation was convincingly in accord with measurements. This work, “Multi-function metamaterials of two-dimensional bilayer nanowire arrays”, has been submitted to Optics Express.

In addition, I got fulfilled and delighted by the researching experience and communications. When I formally prepared my poster for a conference, I learnt how to use Photoshop. Afterwards, with no assistance with the schematic of my sample, I simply used Microsoft Word to draw a picture modifying the three dimensional structure. Recently, my senior elaborated patent application for me and so on. Actually I had gained more than associated knowledge, and gradually these seemingly irrelevant skills or knowledge strength my power and bring me confidence that I am able to start a new project even from scratch. As a result, my persistence on more knowledge leads to deeper studies and therefore I am determined to pursue a PH.D degree in this field.
