Personal Statement

Transportation always fascinates me in all aspects – from a reasonable traffic light to the creation of the advanced technology of Intelligent Transportation System. Living in the bustling city of Guangzhou gives me much opportunity to witness the imbalanced developments of transportation in China. For me, transportation is like a mirror, reflecting a city’s cultural, social and economic development. As far as transportation is concerned, a mature and comprehensive transportation system can not only facilitates efficient flow of goods and movement of people, but also strengthens the economy as well as improve people’s life quality. Hence, I want nothing more than an opportunity to be enrolled in the M.Eng Transportation Engineering program at XX大学, in hope of making my own contribution to transportation development.

Through my undergraduate years at South China University of Technology, a Project 211 and 985 institution in China, I have grown tremendously, both in and out of the classroom. To start with, I was ranked as one of the top 10 best performed students in my department. In addition, I was actively engaged in a wide range of subjects within transportation fields, from traffic design, control and planning to simulation and analysis. Apart from spending considerable amount of time reading theses and studying on my own, I consulted my professors whenever in doubt but never followed their thoughts without any consideration. When it comes to extracurricular activities, I have been working as the minister of Cultural and Artistic Department of Student Union since 2012. In the past year, I have successfully hosted a series of superb shows while tons of unexpected situations were well taken care of in the process. From these extracurricular experiences, my leadership and communication skills have been greatly developed and strengthened, and these skills I believe would serve me well in my future scientific research.

Knowing that theoretical knowledge and passion alone are far from enough, I asked my academic adviser for practical project when I was a freshman. Finally in October 2011, I got valuable opportunity to take part in a research which focused on the traffic infrastructure and situation for pedestrians. In this research, I was mainly responsible to conduct questionnaires, analyze survey results, summarize the characteristics of pedestrians and assist in promoting the final report. We started by making an on-the-spot exploration, to gather more valid information and time-sensitive responses from the residents in the community. During the process of careful inspect, I realized that the way that the government built the traffic infrastructure is not totally reasonable and cannot meet the citizens’ need. For example, the blind sidewalks sometimes end with a tree or even a river, no traffic lights or crosswalks for a busy intersection, etc. Eventually, my summary of existing problems and their possible solutions were adopted in the final report. This invaluable research experience not only taught me the vital importance of investigation and observation, but also it solidified my keen interest in launching a career in transportation engineering.

During my junior year, I had several major course projects, such as Design of Intersection, Coordination of Traffic Signals, Urban Transportation Planning and Traffic Simulation. As a team leader of the first two projects, I set up research plans and frameworks,
I particularly excelled in collecting and analyzing data, and based on which I could finish my design coursework successfully with computer simulation. Thus far, I have invaluable experience participating in several traffic flow investigations, such as Tianhe North project, Zhihui City project and Laos project.

Outside of the transportation world, I have always been an energetic and enthusiastic student taking pride in my extracurricular achievement. My role as the Minister of Cultural and Artistic Department of the Student Union has honed my management and leadership skills to a higher level. I have learn how to management a team, how to motivate my teammates to achieve goals and how to undertake a project. I also found time to do volunteer work in the city library, and I gained a lot from it.

Globally recognized for its research, innovation and teaching quality, University of(学校) always stands out to be my preferred school choice. I have carefully looked over the modules included in the MSc course and found it a perfect match for my academic, strengths and interests. From the program, I can learn about (课程). That is exactly what I want from a postgraduate course. What’s more, I can acquire core skills in information processing, data analysis, problem solving, teamwork and communication, all of which will be of great use in my future career.

In short, your MSc program will contribute greatly to my career goals. I will be equally passionate about my studies and my future career, and your esteemed University, more than anywhere else, can bring out that passion!
