program manager

Q: How many students do you expect to enroll in the MS program in biostatistics this year?
A: We hope to have a class of between 10 and 20 students.

Q: How about the career opportunities of the graduates? What kind of positions did alumni obtain?
A: We are finding that about half of our students look for jobs after graduation and half go on to doctoral programs - either MD or PhD. Those who go to work are split about half and half between academic jobs (research in labs) and jobs in industry or government. Right now, the job market is pretty good, although some cities have more opportunities than others. Students who are flexible about where they will live tend to have the easiest time finding just what they want.

Q: Is there a chance for students to get a TA/RAship?
A: This year all but two of our students received RA positions. Students apply for these positions after the summer session. We can't guarantee these positions as it depends on how much funding is available in any given year, but we try very hard to find positions for students who want them. All students have the opportunity to work as an intern during their second summer, although these positions are for academic credit rather than for pay.

Q: What advantages does your program have over other biostatistics programs?
A: We are very lucky to be an integral part of an important medical center, with access to research hospitals and some of the best faculty in the country. Washington University School of Medicine is one of the top centers for genomic research in the world, so our students are exposed to some of the very most exciting research and projects. We do try very hard to help students find the best way to make the most of their short time here with us. Being an 18 month program is another advantage - less time in school, less time to be paying tuition.
