Please describe your background (academic and extracurricular) and experience, including research, teaching, industry, and other relevant information. Your space is limited to 2000 characters.

From an early age I’ve always been deeply interested in computing. It was my dad, introducing me to the computer systems at his work place that first sparked this interest. I can always remember the feeling of wanting to know just how computers worked, why they worked and what else they could do. In high school, my general enjoyment of computing inspired me to attend the programming contest in Jiang Su Province in China. During preparing for this contest, I taught myself the programming languages Pascal and BASIC to a relatively advanced level.

With exceptional scholastic efforts, I entered the Department of Biotechnology, XXXX University. Because my excellent academic achievements in my undergraduate study, I was admitted by the Ph.D. program of School of Life Science, YYYY University, the top university in China. The greatest impetus that has driven me to learn more computer science was taking the course Introduction to Bioinformatics delivered by Prof. ZZZZ from Center for Bioinformatics in YYYY University. It was from this course I realized that with the explosion of biological data generated by researchers, biological research combined with computational and mathematical method is to develop for sure. Biology study and research experiences from college student to Ph.D. have helped to improve my analytical and evaluative skills, as well as critical thinking capability. Even more important was my keen interest for computer science had never left me, only growing more profound and passionate with every new discovery I made, because there are so many aspects of biological research require computer science knowledge and skills, such as genetics, evolution and protein structures.

After graduated from YYYY University and obtained my Ph.D. degree in biology in 2005, I was recruited to AAAA University in United States for my first postdoctoral research training. Later, in 2008, I moved to BBBB University in United States to continue my postdoctoral research in cancer-immunology. There I made a cutting edge discovery in my research, and my paper was published in Cancer Reseach, the top journal in cancer-immunology field. It was during my cancer-immunology research that I further realize the importance of expanding my computer science knowledge in biology research. The major equipment used for cancer-immunology research is the flowcytometry analyzer. After we got the experimental results from the flowcytometry analyzer, we will use the Flowjo software to analyze the flowcytometry results and make figures. However, Flowjo is not intellectual enough so that users have to write JAVA codes to modify its parameters in order to make Flowjo work properly with the user’s research purpose. At the beginning I faced various difficulties because I had little experience on JAVA programming before. My ability to teach myself and my diligence prevailed to help me to do a wonderful job. Within one month, I had taught myself basic JAVA programming skills by reading the JAVA textbook-JAVA Programming: From the Ground Up. Armed with JAVA programming skills, I modified Flowjo and made beautiful figures for my paper. In addition, our lab had housed and analyzed more than 1,000 mice in our project. Each mouse had a unique number and each mouse generated several aspects of raw data. Our research conclusions are based on the pooled results from the raw data of multiple experimental groups of mice. At the beginning, I organized results purely by hand, which could easily lead to messing up the data from different mouse and a significant slow speed in organizing results. Later, I realized that if I could use some database software to facilitate our data organization, our mice data organization will be much easier and faster. Once again, I taught myself MySQL database software through reading some online tutoring lessons. Thanks to my repeated attempts, times of failures, at last, presented me with the final success in developing a relational database management system. By using this database, our lab could input the raw data from each individual mouse, and output all kinds of organized results easily according to our needs. Our research progress had been greatly expedited.
In July of 2010, I continued my research at CCCC Institute in United States. In CCCC, my research focused on a new discovered gene DDDD, an essential oncogene that cause thymoma, a tumor originating from cells of the thymus. My major project was to find out DDDD’s gene regulating network using the cutting-edge technology: ChIP-seq (Chromatin Immunoprecipitation, plus next-generation DNA sequencing). The next-generation DNA sequencing will generate several Gigabytes sequencing results, and the sequencing results will be aligned to the whole genomic DNA sequence to acquire the DDDD’s gene regulating network. The programs for aligning the next-generation sequencing results to the whole genomic DNA sequence are running under UNIX environment. Because there is no UNIX specialist available in our lab, I started to learn UNIX from scratch. After two month of hard work, I learned the basic UNIX command and successfully aligned the next-generation DNA sequencing results to the whole genomic DNA sequence. Finally, we successfully acquired DDDD’s gene regulating network. More importantly, our understanding of the fundamental molecular mechanisms of the formation of thymoma was greatly enhanced.
When retrospect my past study and research experiences, I realized that computer science knowledge and skills are more and more important for modern biological research as well as clinical diagnostics. I dreamed to grow into a groundbreaking computer program developer focusing on developing computer programs for biological research and clinical diagnostics. EEEE university is a world renowned university and well recognized for its nurturing academic environment, strong faculty and quality educations. The launch of EEEE online Computer Science program has inspired me to apply because of its flexibility, lower cost and remote study. It will give me a most rewarding education that will prepare me to fulfill my dream. I believe that my keen interest in computer programming, my high-motivation in learning computer science knowledge will make me an asset to EEEE online Computer Science program. If I am lucky to be admitted to your program, I will take prerequisite courses as soon as possible. After that, I plan to put forth my best effort to study the required courses. Please consider my application and give me the opportunity to fulfill my dream.
