At Cornell, however, admission is done through a centralized process which means that you are not admitted into a specific group but into a graduate field. After admission you can then join a research group. The graduate field system at Cornell is quite flexible, so you should find the best home for yourself. Given your background you might look into the MSE department for example (I am field member in MSE). You then apply to the department and deadlines should be at the end of the year. Once you are admitted I am happy to meet and discuss our research interests.
