About the position
The Multi-scale, Multi-functional Materials and Structures Research Lab directed by Dr. Weiyi Lu at Michigan State University (MSU) is looking for one passionate and highly self-motivated Ph.D. student to join the research group in Fall 2024. The main future research areas of the prospective student are micro- and nano-fluidics and experimental mechanics.

This student will participate in research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, Ford Motor Company, MSU Innovation Center, and other agencies. Highly qualified applicants will be considered for the Engineering Distinguished Scholarship, a prestigious award for first-year Ph.D. students entering the College of Engineering at MSU.

About the PI
Dr. Weiyi Lu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University. He is also affiliated with the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He received his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in 2011 and performed postdoctoral studies in the Department of Structural Engineering at UCSD from 2011 to 2014.

Dr. Lu’s research is focused on the fundamental science and novel applications of advanced micro- and nano-fluid-based multifunctional materials and structures, additively manufactured hierarchical structures, and intelligent materials and structures. He has published 60+ papers in peer-reviewed journals including PNAS, Advanced Materials, Matter, Physical Review Letters, Nanoscale, Applied Physics Letters, Composites Part B, Composite Structures, Langmuir, The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, Smart Materials and Structures, etc. More details about Dr. Lu can be found at egr.msu.edu

Preference:
  • The candidate must have already earned or should soon earn a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. M.S. degree is a plus.
  • Research experience in experimental mechanics, energy dissipation, and/or high strain rate behavior of materials is preferred.
  • Fluent in English, good written and verbal communication skills.
