Fully Funded Ph.D. Student Positions in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at RPI
We have fully-funded Ph.D. positions in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a specialization in the interplay between Discrete Optimization, Machine Learning and Statistics. The start date is flexible but Fall 2024 is preferred. The Ph.D. students will work with Dr. Diego Moran Ramirez (sites.google.com). His research focuses on: (1) Theory of mixed-integer linear and nonlinear optimization, and (2) Applications of optimization to relevant real-world business and engineering problems, including production planning, logistics, and more recently, problems arising in Statistics and Machine learning. Applications of Machine learning and Statistics to solve challenging optimization problems is also an area of interest.

About the Department and RPI: The ISE doctoral program prepares students with the ability to create and apply new mathematical, computational, and statistical approaches to novel, cutting-edge applications of ISE. This fact allows our Ph.D. graduates to pursue successful careers within academia, industry, and government – RPI was ranked 29th for graduate school in Industrial Engineering by US News (2023) and 19th for career placement by Princeton Review (2021).

Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferably IE or EE), Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related fields.
- Necessary mathematical foundation – preferably some senior-level mathematics courses.
- Strong motivation and interest in research.
- Prior research experience will be a plus – completion of a master’s thesis is preferred.
