Research Assistantships (at the rank of MPhil or PhD student and Postdoc) are available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to work in the interdisciplinary domain of hydroclimatology and hydrometeorology. The awardees will join the research group of Dr. Mengqian Lu. The research will be interdisciplinary by nature, spanning over hydrology, water resources, data science and climate science. The awardees may develop their own research focus, or get started with some ongoing projects or new projects that focus on the application of Big Data analytics to water and/or climate problems in the group, such as tropical cyclones, hydrological extremes like floods and droughts, severe weather events including tornado, hail and etc. and as well as water resources management under climate change.

Minimum requirements: Education and training background in Engineering/Science/Remote Sensing/Geospatial Technologies or related fields, e.g. Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Science, Applied Physics and Applied Math, Statistics, Mathematics, Geophysics.

Desirable qualifications:
; Interested in and/or have experience related to at least one from each of the following two categories:

Category I:
- Hydrology and extremes (floods or droughts);
- Climate change and variability;
- Severe weather (tornado, typhoon/cyclones, hail and etc.) and related topics such as storm surge
- Environmental problems, such as water quality issues

Category II:
- Statistical analysis and modeling;
- Big Data, data science, machine learning
- GIS and spatial statistics, analysis and modeling
- Remote sensing

; Experience with any of the following is a plus: R, MATLAB, Python, Tableau, JAVA, SAS, SPSS, C/C++ or other languages.

Assistantship package: For student awardees (MPhil or PhD): competitive stipend, full tuition and healthcare. For postdoc awardees: competitive salary, coverage for professional studies and training, and healthcare. For all awardees, expenses will be fully covered for research travels (including but not limited to conferences, data collection and visiting overseas research institute for collaboration).

Application instruction: Please send your CV directly to Dr. Mengqian Lu (1point3acres.com) with a brief description of your research interest in the email. Some of her recent work is listed below; copies can be requested.
