On behalf of the Applied Math Department at the University of
Washington, I am pleased to let you know that we are offering you
admission as an online MS student. An offer letter specifying the
details is attached. You will receive a signed copy of this letter by
regular mail.

Now, I realize that this is not exactly what you were hoping for,
since you applied for our on-campus programs. Unfortunately, due to
our faculty size and other constraints we were unable to admit you as
an on-campus MS or PhD student. We had an amazingly large and strong
pool of applicants this year. However, with that being said, we were
very impressed with your file and we very much regret not being able
to offer you admission to those other programs at this time. The
online MS offer is the best we are able to do with the resources we
have.

Next, let me give you some information about the MS program. I'll
expand on some things that are mentioned in the attached form letter.

As you'll see in the offer letter, we are unable to provide support
for any students in the MS program. However, one benefit is it is
possible to move from the MS program into the PhD program (at which
point, you'd be fully supported). Actually, that process is very
simple, as it is entirely internal to the department. A total of
seven students have done that in the last two years and one of them
has been an online MS student.

Also, the online MS program is completely equivalent to our on-campus
MS program: same courses, same instructors, same homework problems and
same exams. The transcript and degree does not even mention the
program was taken online. In fact, since you have the option of
taking identical courses to your on-campus counterparts, the degree
should not say online! Students watch (live or delayed) video feed
instead of attending lecture. Admittedly it is a bit harder to
interact with instructors, but you do have the benefit of pausing and
rewinding.

Furthermore, in terms of overall costs (including insurance, cost of
living, etc), the online program can possibly save you money, as you
won't have to deal with the high cost of living in Seattle. It allows
students to consider living anywhere globally while studying, and it
allows students to work should they choose to do so (as you can study
part-time).

Lastly, if you do wish to accept this offer, please be sure that all
official scores and transcripts as specified in the “status” section
of your online application are submitted to the Graduate School main
office at the address listed in your application and on their website.
You will also be required to pay a confirmation fee (which will be
applied to your future tuition).

Please let us know by April 15th, 2012 if you decide to accept or
decline this offer, and please let us know if you have any questions!

Cheers,

Shari Jacobs
