美国研究生GPA有多重要？

在USC的第一学期选了两门课：561+570，可是之前有一年多没有学习，开始有点不适应，预计561成绩可能在B左右，570可能在B+左右，很沮丧！！！
想问下在美国，研究生成绩是否非常重要，请分找工作和申请博士两方面谈谈，以及有无其他方面的影响。
另外USC入学手册上说：“ All graduate students are required to maintain a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (“B” average), as well as a 3.0 (“B” average) in your applied major courses. You may be dismissed from the program if this is not achieved. ”，不知道哪些算是“applied major course”？劝退好吓人啊……
