We have 6 HPC, haveaccess to D-Wave 2X quantum, and the NSF Carta center which has more than 20industry and government partners (e.g., IBM, Northrop Grumman, Dwave SystemsInc, Seagate, Morgan Stanley, NSA/Lab for Phys. Sci., NSA/Central Sec.Services, NASA/GSFC, DHS).The ISdepartment has a number of research areas including 1point3acres.com, health IT,Human-centered computing, etc. Our faculty members are engaged in state-of-the-art researchin their respective fields resulting in peer-reviewed publications in some ofthe most respected outlets. Our graduate and undergraduate students regularlyassist in this research under the guidance of our faculty members. Many of theresearch in the department are funded by federal and state agencies as well thecorporate world. This includes the National Science Foundation, NationalInstitutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, National Institute ofDisability and Rehabilitation Research, Office of Naval Research, US Army, andthe Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Many of our collaborative researchcross state and national boundaries.
The CSEE department has a diverse researchportfolio with over $8M of research expenditures per year
and often more than $10M). Our location in theBaltimore-DC corridor puts us in the center of one of the largestconcentrations of federal agencies and research and development centers as wellas many industrial research labs. Our EE and CS Ph.D. programs were highlyranked by the 2010 NRC study for research productivity. UMBC is the leadinstitution in the NSF funded Industry & University Cooperative ResearchCenter (I/UCRC). Additionally, UMBC, along with Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Rice,Texas A&M, and CCNY is a member of an NSF Engineering research center namedMIRTHE (Mid-Infrared Technologies for Health and the Environment). UMBC has oneof the best security programs in US, and has a huge center for cybersecurity.Security is UMBC’s strategic direction. Dr. Sisi Duan is an Assistant Professor inthe Department of Information Systems, University of Maryland,Baltimore County. She received her Ph.D. in ComputerScience from the University of California, Davis in 2014(Advisors: Prof. Karl Levitt and Sean Peisert). She got herbachelor degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from theUniversity of Hong Kong in 2010. Prior to joining UMBC in 2017, she was aWeinberg fellow in Computational Data https Group, Oak RidgeNational Laboratory from 2015 to 2017. Dr. Duan's research interests includesecurity, resilience, and reliability in distributed systems and cyber physicalsystems (sensor network, critical infrastructure systems). She is the recipientof the best paper candidate award at SRDS 2014, Alvin M. Weinberg DistinguishedFellowship from ORNL, and one of the three best paper awards from ICDCN 2017. Sheis co-director of DSS lab.sduan.informationsystems.umbc.eduDr. HaibinZhang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science andElectrical Engineering at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Haibinreceived his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis (with Prof. cs.ucdavis.edu). Previously, he worked as apostdoc for two NSF frontier projects on cloud security --- bu.edu (withProf. scl.uconn.edu, aproject among BU, MIT, NEU, and UConn) and silver.web.unc.edu (withProf. cs.unc.edu,a project among UNC, Duke, Cornell, Wisconsin, and CMU). He is interested in cloud computing, cryptography, security, privacy, and distributed systems. He received the best paper candidate award at 33rdIEEE International Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems, proved thesecurity of a NIST standard on ciphertext stealing, and was one of the maininventors of Norton Zone, Symantec’s scalable cloud storage. Recently, hisBChain protocol has been fully implemented in Hyperledger (as Iroha), ablockchain platform that has 250+ industry members. Iroha is one of five matureprojects within Hyperledger umbrella. BChain has been featured in more thanmedia outlets, and Haibin’s other cryptographic works has been used in a numberof practical cryptocurrences and blockchain systems. Haibin is a core member ofUMBC Center for cybersecurity, CDL, CISA, CARTA, and CHMPR. Haibin has beenworking with industry partners to deploy blockchain applications. Haibinco-directs DSS lab at UMBC. csee.umbc.eduThe group designedand implemented a number of blockchain consensus systems, including ByzID (SRDS14, blockchain with trusted components), BChain (OPODIS 14, high-throughputblockchain), CBFT (SRDS 16, blockchain with confidentiality), causal BFT (DSN17, blockchain with causality), and recently BEAT (CCS 18, asynchronousblockchain made practical).
