One PhD student position in Integrative Biosciences PhD and the research area of biomechanics, starting in the Fall 2019 semester, is available at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston), under the supervision of Prof. Joanna B. Dahl (umb.edu).

The accepted student will receive full financial support in the form of Research Assistantship or Teaching Assistantship (including full tuition wavier, monthly stipends, and some other fees) from Prof. Dahl, and he/she will enroll in the PhD program of Integrative Biosciences Graduate Program. The Integrative Biosciences (IB) Graduate Program is a college-wide initiative in the College of Science and Mathematics at UMass Boston. The goal of the Integrative Biosciences Program is to train independent researchers able to apply interdisciplinary approaches to solving problems in the areas of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Bioinformatics.

Prof. Dahl’s current research is the areas of modeling the biomechanics of cells and synthetic cell membranes, developing microfluidic platforms to measure biomechanical properties, and applying these tools to answer biological problems in collaboration with biologists. Her PhD students are expected to work in the above areas.

Qualifications:

* Applicants usually have a BS or MS degree in any one of the following fields: Mechanical Engineering, or other related fields.

* Students from other science and engineering fields (such as Applied Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, etc.) are also encouraged to apply, due to the interdisciplinary nature of Prof. Dahl’s research.

It is expected that applicants have strong motivation, determination, and interest toward research.
