英英解读最常用的66个Idioms

看了论坛里的讨论,很多人反映身边很少人说idioms了。idioms是不是toooooooold了,out了?
就这个问题,我专门请教了我的口语老师,她是加拿大人,多年在高校任教,现退休定居美国。
她的观点是:很多idioms还是经常用的。
我想,也许这就是为什么听演讲、看电影时,身边突然爆发出一阵笑声,而我懵懂无知的原因吧。
当然,日常生活中,尤其是与我们这些非native speaker交流时,也许他们会尽量避免使用idioms,所以我们听到的不多。
再有,也许她的观点,也已经不能代表现代的美国人了,🙂

1. A hot potato
Speak of an issue (mostly current) which many people are talking about and which is usually disputed

2. A penny for your thoughts
A way of asking what someone is thinking

3. Actions speak louder than words
People's intentions can be judged better by what they do than what they say.

4. Add insult to injury
To further a loss with mockery or indignity; to worsen an unfavorable situation.

5. At the drop of a hat
Meaning: without any hesitation; instantly.

6. Back to the drawing board
When an attempt fails and it's time to start all over.

7. Ball is in your court
It is up to you to make the next decision or step

8. Barking up the wrong tree
Looking in the wrong place. Accusing the wrong person

9. Be glad to see the back of
Be happy when a person leaves.

10. Beat around the bush
Avoiding the main topic. Not speaking directly about the issue.
