今天早晨收到的,讲了一大堆,说是我可以去申请正式的流程了,能保证我被MS录取,剩下的大段就是在说我们的PHD没有教授指定要你的话是不行的,blabla。。。。求大米!!谢谢。。Thank you for your pre-application to the CSU computer sciencePhD program. The faculty was impressed by your qualifications, and weinvite you to formally apply to our graduate program as an MS student. We can promisethat (assuming the documentation you provided in your pre-applicationis confirmed) you will be admitted at least to our MS program.Admission to the doctoral program is a competitive process and resources are limited. These resources include both faculty time and financial resources. An advisor playsan essential role in the doctoral program at any university and one cannot completethe PhD without a dedicated advisor. We do not admit anystudents directly into the doctoral program without an explicit commitment from aparticular faculty member to serve as the student's advisor throughout the entiredoctoral process. It is also important for the doctoral student to focus on researchand we only admit Ph.D. students if we have the financial resources to fund thestudent throughout their PhD.In nearly all cases, doctoral students have a five year fundingguarantee, provided they make satisfactory progress. We want to stress this is a competitive process and there are more strongcandidates than positions available. At this point, we are matchingcandidates to faculty interests.Qualified students who were not admitted directly to the doctoral program are oftenadmitted to our masters program. During the first two years, masters anddoctoral students follow an identical course plan. Thedistinction is that masters students do not yet have a permanent advisor. If you have identified a faculty member you would like to have as your doctoral advisor, you should take the graduate level courses from that faculty member as part of yourcourse plan and participate in that area's research group. Thisis identical to what a doctoral student in that area would do. If you havenot identified a clear research area, it is premature to assign you a permanent advisor.Again, you should take courses in the areas that interest you and participate in researchgroups in those areas. Students who succeed in identifying a research area andfinding an advisor are then encouraged to apply for the doctoral program. You will not have not lost any time relative to students admitted directly to thedoctoral program. The distinction is that you gained a permanent advisor in yearone or two of the program rather than starting with a permanent advisor. However it is also important to note that not all masters students find anadvisor.Applying formally to the graduate program has another advantage. Should additionalfunding become available at a later time, there is the possibility thatwe will be able to offer you support. If you are already admitted into theprogram this can be done more quickly. Finally, note other schools may admit students to the doctoral program withoutassigning a permanent advisor and then drop the student from the program ifthey do not find a permanent advisor. By admitting you tothe masters program, we are hoping to convey a clear message on expectationsfor continuing on to a doctorate. We would very much like to see you attendthe university, but you do not yet have an advisor and will need to find an advisorin the first two years if you want to continue on for the doctorate.
