Multiple PhD Research Assistant/ Teaching Assistant (RA/TA) positions are available at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) in the areas of sustainable and energy-efficient buildings, infrastructural materials, smart building technology, and cyber-physical systems. Eligible candidates are expected to have solid engineering background and some level of programing or experimental experience. Knowledge in any or multiple of the following areas would be considered as a plus: multi-physics and finite element modeling; infrastructure materials; mechanics; building physics and energy modeling; artificial intelligence and machinelearning; cyber-security. Prior research experience and publications are a plus, but not required. Appointments will start Spring semester of 2020 or later until the positions are filled.

Selected candidates will work at University of Tennessee’s Smart & Sustainable Built Environment Laboratory in the Department Civil and Environmental Engineering. Several current projects sponsored by US National Science Foundation (NSF), US Department of Energy (DOE), and state of Tennessee provide excellent academic exposures and research opportunities in a wide spectrum of areas, including: energy-efficient building systems, smart building and communities, advanced building materials, additive manufacturing (3-D printing) in construction, and cyber-physical systems. The students will have the opportunity to work with world class faculty and researchers at UTK and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville is located at the beautiful city of Knoxville, TN with 30 minutes driving distance to the Great Smokey National Park. The research and teaching facilities of CEE Department are housed in the new $25M John D. Tickle Engineering Building. Students may take advantage of unique opportunities for multidisciplinary research programs with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and may have access to a number of facilities, including the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS), the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, the Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment, and the Baker Center for Energy and Environmental Policy.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a B.S. degree in Civil and Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related fields. M.S. degree with publication is a plus, but not required. Assistantship Benefits
Competitive stipend, full tuition waiver, and healthcare will be provided to students obtaining RA/TA positions. Room & board expenses will be covered for research travels (conferences, offcampus research, data collections etc.).
