交换的J1签可以extend用来申请暑研吗

有个很想去的暑研项目允许非美国公民参加，原话是这样的：“I am not a citizen but I am studying aboard for 1 year at US university, am I eligible?"
答：You will need to have a visa that authorizes you to intern and be paid.
楼主是下学期正在交换，拿的J1签证，看了一堆J1 extension和J1 work for other employers other than sponsers的网页，实在没看懂，还请各位赐教！
