I recommend doing a Skype call (or other VTC) with all prospective advisors and even see if you can talk separately to 1-2 of their students in a group call. You can ask for the latter and I think they’ll oblige, since you won’t be able to travel (which of course is obvious, I was just not thinking that through). It’s really important to find advisors that you will work well with, in addition to having common technical interest. Ask students what it’s like to work with them, how often do you meet, do they give specific directions or just generally mentor the projects, what are they like most / least about their work and the department, etc.
