Two fully funded Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. student positions at the University of Rhode Island (Spring 2021/Fall 2021)

We are looking for highly motivated graduate students to join Dr. Yang Lin’s Microfluidics Laboratory at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Dr. Lin is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at URI starting Fall 2020. His main research interests focus on microfluidics, also known as lab-on-a-chip technology, along with its applications in interdisciplinary studies.

Successful candidates will work on developments of innovative microfluidic systems to tackle real-world problems involving fluid/particle manipulation, environmental monitoring, public healthcare, biosensing and energy applications. Specifically, ongoing research projects include: 1) 3D printed integrated devices; 2) acoustofluidics and magnetofluidics; 3) paper-based microfluidics; and 4) data-driven diagnostics.

Open Positions
Two Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. student positions are available for Spring 2021 and Fall 2021 in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Systems Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI). Both successful candidates will be fully supported with a GRA/GTA position. URI is a public research university with its main campus in Kingston, Rhode Island. The positions will remain open until filled by qualified candidates.

Your role
Successful candidates will contribute to the design and development of novel micro- and nano-fluidic systems using interdisciplinary knowledge with respect to microfabrication techniques, computational fluid mechanics, machine learning and biological/genetic methodologies. Successful candidates are also expected to engage in data acquisition and analyses, collaborations across departments and universities, student advising and lab management, and maintain strong publication activities.

Qualification
Applicants must have strong motivations and interests in pursuing a doctoral degree in multidisciplinary studies. Applicants must hold a B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials science, electrical engineering, biological engineering or related fields by the time of the appointment starts. Experience and knowledge in microfluidics, additive manufacturing, deep learning, cell and tissue engineering and immunology is highly preferred. Knowledge and hands-on experience in microfabrication and bioassays is also preferred. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability status, etc.

Apply
To apply for the positions, please send your application in ONE .pdf file including your C.V., a letter of motivation and research interest (one page), and two references to Dr. Lin (1point3acres.com).
