Dr.Lei Chen's Manufacturing Innovation and Neural Interface (MINI) lab at theUniversity of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is looking for 2 Ph.D.students in the area of advanced manufacturing and interdisciplinaryresearch on next generation brain-machine interface. The candidates willreceive full funding (tuition, stipend, and benefits) under NationalInstitutes of Health and Department of Mechanical Engineering at UMass Lowell. The positions are available starting January 2021 and will stay openuntil filled.

  • About the university

UMassLowell is a nationally-ranked public research university in Lowell, MA. Lowellis known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, due to a largeseries of historic textile mills and factories, located 25 miles northwest ofBoston. • About the professor

Dr.Lei Chen is joining UMass Lowell in January 2021 as AssistantProfessor in Mechanical Engineering. He will be part of the Mechanics &Materials Group. He is currently Research Investigator in MechanicalEngineering at University of Michigan (UMich), Ann Arbor. He received his Ph.D.(2017) and M.S. (2014) in Mechanical Engineering from the UMich, and his B.E.(2013) in Mechatronic Engineering from Zhejiang University in China. He alsoholds joint appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at UMich Medical Schoolfor his brain-machine interface studies. Visit leichen.info for more information.

  • About the lab

Researchof the lab will be focusing on three major areas:

(1)Advanced and smart manufacturing processes: generation of theoreticaland fundamental understandings of advanced smart manufacturing processes (bothadditive and subtractive) through innovative monitoring methods, numericalmodelling, data analysis, and collaborations with industry.

(2)Biomedical manufacturing: application of advanced design algorithm andmanufacturing technology to advance the safety, quality, cost, efficiency, andspeed of healthcare service.

(3)Brain-machine interface / Neural interface: manufacturing technology andcutting mechanics driven development of the next generation neural interfacefor large-scale chronic communication between our natural intelligence and theartificial intelligence of a machine in the smart society era.

  • Qualifications

Eligiblecandidates should have a Bachelor or Master's degree inMechanical/Industrial/Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field. The successful candidate would be ahighly-motivated researcher with great hands-on skills, strong willingness tolearn, and excellent communication skills for broadly collaborative researchprojects with industry, healthcare, and neuroscience community. It is desirable that the candidate haspractical knowledge and experience in one or more of the following:
