Funded PhD in CFD and Optimization at Iowa State University

The iDesign lab from the Aerospace Engineering Department of Iowa State University is hiring one fully-funded Ph.D. student for the Fall of 2021. The student will work with faculties and students from the iDesign lab and our collaborators to develop state-of-the-art numerical algorithms and codes and use them to perform high-fidelity multidisciplinary optimization for aerospace engineering designs. They will also be able to attend conferences and workshops, presenting research, and communicating with peers in academia and industry.

The student is expected to work on one of the following projects: unsteady CFD and adjoint development for electric aircraft design optimization, and modular CFD and adjoint framework for large-scale multidisciplinary design optimization.

Iowa State University is located in Ames, IA, 40 minutes from the Des Moines metro area. Ames is constantly ranked as a top college town in the US. According to the US News 2020 report, the ISU’s College of Engineering ranks 22nd among 132 public universities in the US, and the ISU’s Aerospace Engineering graduate program ranks 19th among all public universities.

We are looking for candidates who:

1. Have a B.S. or M.S. degree in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or other closely related fields.
2. Are interested in numerical simulations, design optimization, and model development.
3. Are highly motivated and dedicated to graduate study and research.
