Multiple fully-funded PhD positions available in the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at Penn State University (PSU) working with Dr. Jinghui Chen starting Fall 2021 or Spring 2022.
Dr. Jinghui Chen will join the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State University in Fall 2021 as a tenure-track assistant professor. Dr. Chen obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from UCLA. He obtained his BEng degree in Electronic Engineering and Information Science from the University of Science and Technology of China. Dr. Chen has previously interned at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, JD AI Research, Twitter, and Microsoft Research. His research interests are broadly in machine learning and its applications on real-world problems, with a recent focus on adversarial machine learning. His research papers have been published in top-tier machine learning/data mining/AI conferences such as ICML/NeurIPS/KDD/AISTATS/UAI/AAAI/IJCAI. A student will be considered as a strong fit with previous experiences in one of the following areas:
(1) Adversarial machine learning (robustness of ML)
(2) Optimization of machine learning algorithms (efficiency of ML)
(3) Security and privacy issues in machine learning
(4) Other ML domains such as CV / NLP / Graph / RL / AutoML / Fairness...
Basic Requirements:
(1) Strong self-motivation to tackle challenging research problems.
(2) Bachelor's or Master's degrees in Math/CS/EE/Stat or relevant subjects.
(3) Strong programming and/or mathematical skills
Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Prior research experience in related topics and areas
(2) Familiar with at least one of the common deep learning platforms
Remote internship is also available. Students who demonstrate their research abilities can work with Dr. Chen as PhD students later or receive strong recommendation letters.
