单位概况

Dr. Dingwen Tao from School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Washington State University (WSU) and his directed HiPDAC lab (dingwentao.com) invite applications for PhD studies in the areas of high-performance computing (HPC), parallel & distributed systems, distributed learning, and quantum computing. Students will be fully funded by full research assistantship.

WSU is among 108 public and private universities in America recognized with the “very high research activity” categorization and among 240 universities and colleges nationwide to earn the “community engagement” classification from the Carnegie Foundation. WSU ranks #47 in the list of top national public universities in U.S according to Washington Monthly. WSU is one of the nation’s top 50 public research universities in computer science according to U.S. News and World Report. According to CSRankings (2016-2021), WSU ranks #5 in design automation, #11 in HPC, #50 in database, #54 in AI, #61 in all system areas in U.S. 90% of WSU EECS junior faculty members have received prestigious federal young investigator awards, such as NSF/DOE/DOD Early Career Award. Students in EECS also won highly competitive PhD fellowships such as Microsoft PhD Fellowship. WSU is located at Pullman close to Seattle, Portland, and Boise, which have many giant IT companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, Intel, Micron. With a population of 33,000, Pullman is a quintessential college town—one of the top 10 in the nation according to MSN’s 2012 report on the “Best College Towns in North America.” Situated to the east of the Cascade Mountains, Pullman enjoys a dry four-season climate (21 inches of annual precipitation), with sunny, warm summers, relatively mild winters, and excellent access to outdoor recreational opportunities.

导师信息
Dr. Dingwen Tao received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Riverside in 2018 and his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2013. Prior to joining WSU, he worked at the University of Alabama, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Tao is the receipt of the 2020 IEEE Computer Society TCHPC Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High Performance Computing, 2020 NSF CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Award, and 2017 UCR Dissertation Year Program (DYP) Award. He has published in more than 50 papers in top-tier HPC and big data venues, including SC, ICS, HPDC, PPoPP, PACT, IPDPS, DAC, CLUSTER, ICPP, MSST, BigData, TC, TPDS, etc. He has been working closely with multiple teams and scientists from federal laboratories (Argonne National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Lab, Pacific Northwest National Lab). His research has been supported by NSF, DOE, NOAA, AMD, and Xilinx. More info about Dr. Tao can be found: dingwentao.com

科研项目信息
The lab has received over $1M of funds (the director as the PI) and over $10.9M funds (the director as the Co-PI) from federal agencies (NSF, DOE, NOAA). The lab also works closely with federal laboratories (Argonne National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, Pacific Northwest National Lab, Oak Ridge National Lab) and industry companies (Xilinx, AMD) to solve the practical problems that are critical to them. Most PhD students at HiPDAC lab have interned at these national/research labs to work on fantastic collaborative projects. More info about HiPDAC’s on-going projects can be found: dingwentao.com
