Multiple fully funded RA positions for Computer Science (CS) PhD students are available in the Software Reliability and Security group within the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at Washington State University (WSU), Pullman, WA.
Research in the group currently focuses on the security and other quality aspects of mobile apps, distributed systems, and multi-language software, primarily through developing and applying scalable and cost-effective program analysis techniques in synergy with data-driven (especially deep learning) approaches. The group is well funded by several U.S. federal grants on projects aiming to address
(1) data quality problems in learning deep code models for software vulnerability analysis (e.g., leveraging generative models for automated, massive generation of realistic data samples to support training of powerful, generalizable DL code models),
(2) autonomic information security defense in adversarial and dynamic environments mainly through efficient system profiling and (deep) reinforcement learning, and
(3) vulnerability discovery from indutry-scale distributed software systems via scalable program analysis techniques.

Incoming PhD students are expected to work one of these projects for the next 4~5 years with funding assured, although students interested in other software engineering/system and mobile apps/security topics are equally welcome with sufficient funding support as well.

Applicants expecting to start in Spring 2022, Fall 2022, and beyond are all considered, until the openings are filled.
  • For Spring 2022 applicants, the official deadline has passed but applications are still being accepted (please act as soon as possible if interested).
  • For Fall 2022 applicants, please note the application deadline is January 10, 2022.

For more information, please check out the professor's webpage at chapering.github.io, where the general expectations for PhD applicants are outlined.

For any questions, please contact the professor directly.
