Prof. Dr. Michael Backes and Dr. Yang Zhang at CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security (Germany) are looking for multiple fully-funded Ph.D. students working on

Michael Backes (cispa.de) is the Founding Director of CISPA. His current research focuses on the development of methods for protecting personal data; investigating trustworthy methods for machine learning as well as universal solutions in software and system security. Over the last years, Mr. Backes has published over 250 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious international journals and conference proceedings and has been honored with highly renowned awards, in particular, the ERC Synergy Grant, the EU’s most distinguished research award. In 2009, Mr. Backes was Germany’s first researcher to receive the MIT TR35 Award. He is moreover the youngest member to date in acaTech, Germany’s National Academy of Science and Engineering. He has received an honorary doctorate from Université de Lorraine and is an IEEE Fellow.

Yang Zhang (yangzhangalmo.github.io) is a faculty member at CISPA. His research mainly concentrates on trustworthy machine learning. Over the past few years, Yang has published multiple papers at top venues in computer science (particularly security), including CCS, NDSS, USENIX Security, and WWW. His work has received NDSS 2019 distinguished paper award. He has served in the technical program committee of ACM CCS 2021 2020 2019, USENIX Security 2022 2021, etc.

CISPA is one of the world-leading research institutes concentrating on information security and privacy. Located at Saarbruecken Germany, CISPA is the newest member of the Helmholtz Association (helmholtz.de), the largest scientific organization in Germany fully committed to scientific excellence and to tackling the grand research challenges in their respective fields. The working language of CISPA is English and knowledge of German is not required.

Requirements:
- A bachelor/master degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or Mathematics
- Excellent English (knowledge of German is not required)
- Excellent programming skills
- Good knowledge about machine learning/data mining
