Two funded PhD openings at the University of Rhode Island

Summary
Two funded PhD openings are available at the University of Rhode Island to conduct research in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle in the Smart Ocean Systems (SOS) laboratory (soslab.wordpress.com) and the Intelligent Control and Robotics Laboratory (web.uri.edu/icrl/home/). The perspective students are expected to perform high-quality research in hardware/software development in underwater systems, learning-based control, and novel sonar-based terrain-reconstruction algorithms. The students are expected to start in September 2022 or January 2023.
Required qualifications:
- Possess a bachelor’ degree in engineering, computer science or relevant fields. Candidates who expect to receive the degree before the expected starting date (September 2022 or January 2023) is also qualified.
- Familiar with Linux operating system and programming languages such as Python, C++,
- Familiar with engineering software, e.g., Solidworks, MATLAB and ROS.

Preferred qualifications:
- Possess a master’s degree in engineering, computer science or relevant fields. Candidate who expected to receive his master’s degree before the expected starting date (September 2022 or January 2023) is also qualified.
- Strong background in mathematics and/or control.
- Demonstrate previous experience in robotics with physical systems in, preferably, outdoor environment.
- Demonstrate previous experience software developing using ROS middleware and OpenCV.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving capability, excellent communication skills, and scientific writing/reporting skills
- Relevant experience in marine robotics will be considered as an asset.
