Multiple positions (Master’s/PhD students and Postdoctoral scholar) in Marine Robotics

Multiple funded positions are available at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) to conduct research on multi-robot collaboration and coordination, cooperative localization, optimal path planning, state estimation and learning in dynamic environments, etc.. The prospective researchers are expected to work on physical marine robotic platforms (including AUV, ASV and underwater floats) with a focus on at least one of the following areas:
1) novel underwater localization and sensor fusion algorithms,
2) sensor-driven coverage-based mission and path planner,
3) multi-platform coordination strategies.
The successful candidates are expected to work with the PIs and collaborators from multiple institutes and participate in field experiments. All positions will be available to start in September 2022.

For Master’s/PhD applicants (URI and UHM)
Required qualifications
  • Possess a bachelor’ degree in engineering, computer science or relevant fields. Candidates who expect to receive the degree before the expected starting date are also qualified.
  • Familiar with Linux operating system and programming languages such as Python, C++.
  • Familiar with engineering software, e.g., MATLAB and ROS.
  • Other general admission criteria can be found on web.uri.edu for URI candidates and manoa.hawaii.edu for UHM candidates.
  • Relevant experience in marine robotics will be considered as an asset.

Preferred qualifications
  • Possess a master’s degree in engineering, computer science or relevant fields. Candidates who expect to receive the master’s degree before the expected starting date are also qualified (PhD applicants only)
  • Strong skills in robotic software development and sensor integration, preferably using ROS.
  • Demonstrate previous experience in robotics with physical systems in, preferably, outdoor environments.
  • Demonstrate previous experience in software development using PCL library, Open3D and path planners.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving capability, excellent communication skills, and scientific writing/reporting skills
  • Additional experience in electronics (e.g., PCB design) will be considered as an asset.

For Postdoctoral scholar (UHM only)
Required qualifications
  • Possess a PhD degree in engineering, computer science or relevant fields. Candidates who expect to receive the degree before the expected starting date are also qualified.
  • Have experience in marine robotics, worked on physical systems and real-world applications.
  • Experienced in developing software using C++ and the ROS (or ROS2) middleware.
  • Have worked on underwater localization (e.g., SLAM and terrain-aided navigation) and path planning, e.g., coverage path planners.

Preferred qualifications
  • Have a track of records of publishing high-quality papers with novel methods and field validations.
  • Have experience in processing data from oceanographic instruments, e.g., CTD, sonar systems, acoustic modems and USBL systems.
  • Experience in proposal writing and student advising will be considered as an asset.
