Ph.D. students openings at Drexel University
Dr. Yong-Jie Hu’s research group in the department of materials science and engineering at Drexel University (drexel.edu, Philadelphia, USA) is looking for motivated Ph.D. students starting in September 2022 or January 2023. The successful candidates will receive research assistantships with full financial support. We encourage applications from highly self-motivated students with a keen interest in applying state-of-art materials simulation tools and data-science techniques to advance the design of new 2D materials. Successful candidates should have a solid education/research background in materials science and engineering, physics, mechanics, or other related fields. Experience in computational materials modeling or code programming is preferred but not required. The research areas and interests of Dr. Hu’s group lie in employing computational materials modeling and simulation methods, primarily first-principles calculations, molecular dynamic/static simulations and CALPHAD modeling, as well as data-science/statistical algorithms to rationalize the design of advanced materials by investigating the critical mechanical, thermodynamic and electronic properties.
Candidates will conduct research in one or more of the following areas:
; Development of new quantitative and predictive theories and models for the design and synthesis of novel 2D materials
; Mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of 2D materials

About the MSE department of Drexel:
Located in an exciting urban environment, the MSE department of Drexel University has rapidly expanded during the past 10 years; consisting of 14 faculty, ~130 undergraduate and over ~80 graduate students working in research directions including nanomaterials, electronic materials, advanced alloys, structural materials, soft and biomaterials, and materials for energy and environment applications. Drexel's MSE graduate program is 27th in the U.S. News & World Report national rankings, and the PhD program is ranked 11th out of 88 materials programs in the United States according to the National Research Council (NRC) S-Rankings.
Bio of Dr. Yong-Jie Hu:
Dr. Yong-Jie Hu is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the department of materials science engineering at University of Michigan, and will join the department of materials science and engineering at Drexel University as an assistant professor in January 2021. He received his BE degree from Tsinghua University in 2010 and MS degree from Tohoku University in 2012. In 2016, he received his Ph.D. degree in materials science and engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.
