Multiple fully funded Ph.D. scholarship opportunities are available starting at Fall 2023. Successful candidates are expected to carry out research in one or more of the areas:
; Machine learning (e.g., reinforcement learning) for control and optimization
; Computational intelligence algorithms and theories
; Smart grid and microgrid energy management
; Cyber physical autonomous systems

We are particularly interested in highly-motivated students with a strong research background and capability. Ideal candidates are expected to have:
; A Master degree in electrical and computer engineering, and computer science
; Strong mathematical background in modeling, optimization and analysis
; Hands-on experience in computer programming, such as Python, C++ and/or Matlab/Simulink
; Good communication and writing skills

Dr. Ni is an Associate Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Boca Raton, FL. His research mainly includes Artificial and Computational Intelligence, Machine Learning, and applications for Robotics, Smart Grid, and Cyber-Physical Systems. He has authored and co-authored for 100+ peer-reviewed research papers mostly on IEEE Transactions journals and major conferences. Dr. Ni received the prestigious FAU Researcher of the Year Award (2022), NSF CAREER Award (2021), ORAU Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award (2020), IEEE CIS Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award (2020), International Neural Networks Society (INNS) Aharon Katzir Young Investigator Award (2019), and so on. Dr. Ni has successfully supervised a group of talented students, who have received the best paper/poster awards and other research recognitions. Recent graduate students landed either in U.S. National Laboratories or the leading industry companies.

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at FAU consists of 44 faculty and 5 staff members and has a student body of over 1,000 undergraduate and 350 graduate students. EECS offers baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The department also currently offers MS degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Bioengineering, and Information Technology and Management. The department’s current active funding portfolio is over $15.0M, with support from federal funding agencies such as NSF, NIH, DoD, DoE, and DARPA, as well as Industry.
