Study hard in school is quite important for you to get a good job after graduation. The ability to relate well to people, however, plays a more critical role in achieving success in the career. Studying hard makes a solid foundation of your success, while progress in the future job also requires to understand others and to have a good reputation among your team.
Without studying hard in school, it would be more difficult for one to succeed. University courses are hard, and one can rarely reach good scores without hard work. Large companies or those competitive start-ups will not even consider offering an applicant the interview opportunity if the applicant got a GPA lower than 3.0. In the top companies, one will learn better and faster. Failing to have a good job really hurts one's ability to succeed in the future job.
Once you get into the realm, the ability to communicate matters more. Inadequate communication can result in terrible results. Imagine that you have been working on a project for 4 days, and when meeting with your leader, you just realize that you have totally misunderstood the task. Poor skills of relating to people can result in poor communication skills. Also, if you had related well to people, this kind of condition would be less likely to happen. Your colleagues or your leader may notice the problem earlier, so you don't need to waste as much time as four days.
Furthermore, earning a good reputation is a crucial step to success in the area. To make the fame, you not only need to be professional but also need the ability to relate well to people. If you just have the professional skills, few people will know that, though you always perfectly finish your tasks. Your merits will be spread more widely if you are relating well with others in your field.
To sum up, the ability to relate well to people is indeed more important to be successful in the career than doing good in school.
